What to Expect

New Patient Consultation & Examination:

Your first appointment at ChiroClinic will begin with a discussion about you, your health and your reasons for attending the clinic.

Your chiropractor will ask a great deal of information, not only about your pain or complaint, but also about your past and family medical history. Some questions may appear irrelevant to you, but they are extremely important to your chiropractor to ensure that appropriate care is given. All information taken is completely confidential and no one else will be allowed to see or access your notes without your permission.

Once your chiropractor has a good case history from you, they will examine you to confirm your problem. This examination will concentrate mainly on your neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles and joints), but it may also be necessary to check your heart, lungs, and abdomen to rule out other causes. This thorough check-up is a normal procedure at ChiroClinic.

Gowns are available for you to wear during the examination and any subsequent treatments if necessary.

Explanation (Report of Findings):

At ChiroClinic, we pride ourselves on explaining your problem both clearly and thoroughly, so you get a good understanding of what is wrong, what can be done to help and what you should expect as treatment without being bamboozled by medical jargon.

You will be advised of all costs related to your future care together with a rough idea of how long it will take to get better. We will also advise you of the likelihood of any recurrence of your problem and the possible need for on-going supportive or preventative care (not an unusual situation for patients who have had serious injuries or have wear and tear of the joints).

The only time this full explanation may not happen during your first appointment is if X-rays or an MRI scan are required, or if your chiropractor needs to obtain further information from your GP (e.g. blood tests).

Treatment:

Following the report of findings, most patients will be offered treatment almost immediately as we understand that you’ll be desperate to get back to normality as quickly as possible.

Chiropractic treatment at ChiroClinic in Ramsey involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulative techniques to free joints in the spine or other related areas that are not moving properly – called adjustments. During adjustments, you may hear an audible ‘pop’ or ‘click’ which is simply the sound of gas bubbles popping in the joint fluid as the pressure is released. Adjustments do not tend to hurt.

As well as the adjustments, your Chiropractor may use soft tissue treatments such as massage, acupuncture or kinesiotaping to assist in your treatment.

Chiropractic treatment may bring temporary relief to symptoms, but often there is no instant cure and some patients may experience brief symptoms such as pain or soreness around the treatment areas after the treatment, as though the problem has got worse before it gets better. Your chiropractor will finish the treatment session with any advice they feel necessary to help limit any discomfort associated with your complaint and the treatment.

A part of getting better is up to you, so please follow any instructions and advice carefully and completely, otherwise this may slow or halt your progress.
