What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially related to the spine (neuromusculoskeletal complaints). There are few other definitions of Chiropractic, which you can read on the World Federation of Chiropractic website here.

Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation (manual adjustments) to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving correctly. This in turn alleviates the irritation to spinal nerves and the nervous system as a whole, consequently improving health. As well as adjustments, chiropractors may also use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, massage and acupuncture together with advice about posture, lifestyle and nutrition.

Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, patients also consult chiropractors regarding a range of other related conditions such as headaches, arthritis and sports injuries. In fact some very famous Olympic athletes like Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and tennis player Andy Murray have their own sports chiropractor to help them manage sports injuries and for prevention of injuries.

When appropriate, chiropractors may refer patients to medical doctors or other health practitioners for further assessment and/or treatment. This is important as there might be times when the chiropractor feels that after assessing your situation that you may have a condition that needs a referral to a specific specialist for further investigation. Chiropractors are trained to look for changes in someones health that are beyond the realm of manual therapy treatment options. If a referral is warranted the aim is to then refer you to the best healthcare practitioner to help your specific health condition. This is so that you can get an answer as to what is going on with you or get a resolution to your situation as quick as possible.
